Oxford has been ranked the best university in the world for first time in sptember 2016
... partly thanks to Cecil the Lion as the institution received record external research funding.
Last summer , the killing of Cecil the Lion by an American dentist triggered donations of more than half a million pounds to the university’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit.
Professor Louise Richardson, Oxford’s vice-chancellor, has said record research funding has been one of the contributing factors that led to her institution reach the top spot – the first time a British university has taken the accolade.
Oxford received a record £522.9 million in external funding last year, an increase from £478.3 million a year earlier.
