Commonwealth Games a major event in the world of sports !

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games are the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade

and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen.

From 4-15 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories  converge on the Gold Coast to deliver 11 unforgettable days of world class sporting competition.

Team England has  sent a team of over 400 athletes in what is England’s largest ever team to represent the nation in an overseas sporting event. The Team  competes in 18 sports, including 38 para medal events.



What countries are in the Commonwealth?

The Commonwealth comprises 52 independent sovereign states.

The Commonwealth comprises states that were earlier territories of the British Empire. It includes about a quarter of the world's population and land surface.

they share a common language and a similar system of government and law.

The Commonwealth promotes democracy, the rule of law, good governance and human rights.

Member states of the Commonwealth range from countries in Africa, including Botswana, Ghana and Cameroon, to countries in the Americas, like Barbados, the Bahamas and Belize.

There are also two European countries which are part of the group - Cyprus and Malta.

Although the countries which were formerly territories of Britain achieved independence, Countries have continued to join since then, but the last country to become a member was Rwanda in 2009.


Therefore  they are countries from across the globe, including Asia, Africa and Europe, all sign up to the same values and principals, acknowledging the shared history they have together.

The Queen is the Head of the Commonwealth and the Head of State of UK. The main intergovernmental agency of the Commonwealth is the Commonwealth Secretariat based in London. The Commonwealth Secretariat organizes Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) every two years.




How is Australia related to the Commonwealth ? 


Did you know that Australia was a founder member of the Commonwealth in 1931 when its independence was recognised under the Statute of Westminster ? 

It is one of 28 island nations in the association; the mainland of Australia is the largest island in the world.
